A Teleological Model of Food (Foundational Nutrition)

A purpose-driven, tier-based model of the ideal human diet.

A purpose-driven model of an ideal human diet, ordered by biological intent rather than industrial priorities or scientifically reductive recommendations. Foods are organized into tiers based on their role in sustaining life and vitality.

Tier 1 Foods

These are high-calorie and nutrient-dense foods meant specifically to nurture life. They are the most complete and bioavailable foods that provide the necessary building blocks for growth, development, and maintenance of the organism. In humans, these foods should make up the majority of the diet (unless otherwise noted), especially in early life stages, and are meant to be consumed in their whole form (raw, minimal to no processing, unrefined).

  • Mammalian Milk
  • Eggs
  • Occasionally/Moderately: Honey/Royal Jelly (fast energy)
  • Occasionally/Moderately: Seeds/Nuts (slow energy)

Tier 2 Foods

These are nutrient-dense whole animals that maintain the organism through stages of life after provisioning (the finished product of Tier 1). In humans, these foods are meant to be consumed in their whole form (raw, minimal to no processing, unrefined) and should be the mainstay of the diet after infancy.

  • Muscle Meat
  • Animal Fat
  • Organs
  • Marrow/Blood
  • Shellfish

Tier 3 Foods

These are sugar-rich and fat-rich foods that are created specifically to attract animals for dispersal/pollination. In humans, these foods are meant to be consumed daily, seasonally, and in their whole form (raw, minimal to no processing, unrefined) for energy and micronutrients, but not as the mainstay of the diet.

  • Fruit (and Nectar)

Tier 4 Foods

These are supporting structural/functional plant parts that serve as defenses, photosynthetic machinery, or nutrient storage organs. In humans, these foods are typically consumed when Tier 1-3 foods are not available, for variety/diversity, and used temporarily or instrumentally. They should be consumed fresh, fermented, or otherwise minimally processed.

  • Tubers
  • Roots
  • Stems
  • Leaves
  • Bark

They are used temporarily or instrumentally in the following ways:

  • Supplements: to replenish what is missing.
  • Adaptogens: to balance what is stressed.
  • Modulators: to support and regulate biological processes.
  • Therapeutics: to heal what is broken.
  • Nootropics: to enhance and provide clarity to the mind.
  • Psychotropics: to transform and integrate toward awakening.
